About Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park

Situated on the east side of Mount Desert Island, the 3rd largest island on the eastern seaboard, Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park has welcomed visitors for over 150 years. Downtown Bar Harbor offers the charm of a quaint New England fishing village with all of the attractions of a major resort center, including a wide-range of services, accommodations, restaurants, activities, shopping, tennis, golfing, museums, and theaters.

There are multiple excursions to explore the waters, outer islands, lighthouses, and wildlife. Respond to the allure of the sea by canoe or kayak, whale watch or schooner. Bar Harbor's nightlife is as varied as the day's activities. Whether you want a romantic candle light dinner or live band at a local pub there is plenty to keep you busy after dark.

The beauty of the northeast's only national park surrounds Bar Harbor. Acadia's 41,000 acres offers an amazing array of mountains and sea, cliffs and coastlines. A study in contrasts, Acadia remains one of the country's most popular tourist destinations.

The glacier formed mountains are accessible to novice and expert hikers alike, with over 100 miles of trails providing breathtaking views of the islands and sea. 57 miles of groomed car-free carriage roads wind through the park for walking, biking, cross-country skiing, and carriage rides throughout the seasons.

For those who prefer to tour by car, the park loop road is a 27-mile scenic route along the granite cliff coastline past cobblestone beaches then immersed in the park's gardens and natural attractions.

One of the incredible benefits the national park provides is the ability to observe the hundreds of species of wildlife. The gulf of Maine is home to whales, porpoises and seals. On land, white-tailed deer are plentiful and a lucky few will see the elusive moose. Peregrine falcons, bald eagles, loons, osprey, the great blue heron, and over 275 species of birds, both migratory and native can be found.
